EarthCARE's EXPO held on May 8th at Confederation Education Centre was a huge success. It was hosted by CBC Radio's host of All In A Day, Adrian Harewood, who was upbeat and entertaining and did a great job acknowledging the students.

Students from Century PS and Cairine Wilson SS talked about their EarthCARE programs and why it is important for them to be environmental stewards. They personalized their experiences so that members of the audience who are not in our schools could appreciate the many activities our EarthCARE teams are involved in to make a difference in their schools, communities and the world.

Lynn Scott, Chair of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board brought greetings from the Board and shared her message of why it is important to be an environmental steward and the impact of climate change which she highlighted with her photographs of moths.

The Minister of the Environment, John Baird, attended to present the Jenny Awards Emily Carr Middle School at the elementary level and Glebe Collegiate Institute at the secondary level. The Jenny Awards are given in memory of Jennifer Teague, a role model of environmental stewardship in her short life. Minister Baird also took time to address the audience. He has been a great supporter of EarthCARE.

Superintendent Jennifer Adams presented the David Suzuki Innovation Castlefrank ES and Elizabeth Wyn Wood Alternate Program for their winning poster entries on how the schools were making a difference in their communities.

Dave Seymour, Vice-president of Ameresco Canada Eastern Region, presented the Ameresco Awards to the elementary winner of the Haiku poem contest to Sarah from W. Erskine Johnston PS and the secondary winner of the essay contest to Melanie from Cairine Wilson SS.

Our keynote speaker, Simon Jackson, founder and chairman of the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition was a hit! He told 'his story', a perfect example of how one person can and has made a difference in the world. It was inspirational.

Expo is our opportunity to recognize our EarthCARE team leaders, their students and our many supporters in both the OCDSB and the community. EarthCARE is appreciative of their efforts and support.
